Honorary Cowboy: Calvin Curtis
Calvin was born and raised in Monroe, Utah. He
graduated from South Sevier High School in 1959,
then attended SUU in Cedar City two years. He
married Emalee Hansen July 28, 1961. He has three
sons and nine grandchildren.
Calvin purchased the HiRoe Dairy from his Grandpa
and went into the dairy business. Two of his sons
now work with him on the farm and dairy.
Calvin was a member of the Monroe Volunteer Fire
Department for 37 years. He is currently serving
on the board of both the Monroe Irrigation Canal
and South Bend Canal. He is a member of the
Sevier Valley Chapter, Sons of the Utah Pioneers.
Calvin was a state director and steward (judge) of
the Utah State Riding Club Association for 12 years.
He was elected as a director of the Utah State
Quarter Horse Association for eight years. He was
also an advisor to the Sevier County High School
Rodeo Club for eight years. He still has several
mares and looks forward to each spring raising a
new crop of colts. He traveled with his two old-
est sons for eight years as they participated in High School Rodeo. Calvin has raised and raced
quarter horses. He has enjoyed team roping and has traveled to Oklahoma City several times to
participate in the USTRC National Team Roping Finals.
Calvin enjoys traveling back roads, hunting, pack trips, camping, and reading about the old west.
He also enjoys driving his team of mules in parades and on wagon trains for weddings and various
school groups. He owns quite a collection of wagons and buggies.
His family hosts local school groups for a "Day at the Farm" activity which includes a tour of the
dairy barn, feeding baby calves, riding on a pony, inspection of a large tractor, and a wagon ride
around the farm yard.
He also participates in "Pioneer Day" when the
school children learn about pioneer activities,
and includes a wagon ride around town.
Calvin said, "The traditions of the old west
have played a big part in my life. I still ride
the trails on Monroe Mountain that were shown
to me by my grandfather, and enjoy participat-
ing in wagon treks that celebrate area cen-
tennial and sesquicentennial activities. These
activities allow me to better appreciate the
hardships endured by those who settled our
state and be grateful for the life our family
enjoys living here today."
